Teaching Profile

Dr. Wood has over eighteen years of teaching experience and have designed and taught a wide array of courses in Film and Media Studies and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.  In the classroom, Dr. Wood emphasizes active learning and organizes her courses around a combination of interactive lectures and focused group discussions so that students are dynamically involved with their peers and the materials. Her research interests shape and inform her teaching as she frequently introduce texts that push at the boundaries of particular genres and media, as well as narratives that focus on those who inhabit the margins, in order to ask students to interrogate the assumptions behind institutionally and socially sanctioned concepts of value, canonicity, and normativity.

When possible, Dr. Wood enjoys using technology to reinforce her pedagogical objectives in the classroom, and to develop multimodal assignments that teach students how to integrate their creative and critical thinking abilities to communicate in digitally innovative ways. Students in Dr. Wood's classes not only learn how to analyze film and media and their global contexts, but also how to present that analysis via a variety of platforms like blogs, wikis, websites, Twitter, videos, photo essays, digital portfolios, and more.
